Cauliflower Ear: Badge Of Honor Or A “Strange Looking Deformation” You’d Rather Not Get?

bjj cauliflower ear

It’s funny, when I lived in a wrestling community cauliflower ear was seen as a badge of honor – common. Being in California (land of Jiu Jitsu) I constantly get people asking if I am a fighter. Yet, I have met some people who have said “I didn’t know what that was at first, maybe like some type of birth defect, deformity or something.”

When younger my mother would say take care of that before you go out into the working world, etc. I would say well it makes me look like a wrestler and an employer will likely think I work hard if they recognize it.

Whatever the case may be those of us who do martial arts live within our own world and know it to be a normal sign, usually of a person who has been doing martial arts a while. Not everyone gets it and that’s fine, but it’s certainly common in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

The question is do you think it is mainly seen as a badge of honor or do you think it is seen as a deformity and would prefer not to get it?
