4 Common Jiu Jitsu Supplements

BJJ Supplements

Jiu Jitsu, the gentle art, can also bring a lot of pain depending on how you roll or train. Accidents can also happen. Aging is obviously occurring with generation X so it’s getting harder to stay on the mat. We get banged up. Let’s take a look at 4 common supplements people use in Jiu Jitsu. Before taking any supplement please consult with your doctor.

  1. Glucosamine & Fish Oil – Some studies have suggested that this can help with joint pain/mild arthritis. Glucosamine is often combined with fish oil so those with shellfish allergies need to do their research prior to trying this supplement out. Many in BJJ swear by this supplement so it may be worth a try.
  2. CBD Oil – This has been said to relieve pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. Many BJJ athletes swear by it. The industry producing CBD oil is currently not highly regulated so caution does exist. According to this webmd article evidence is scant for it’s uses besides child epilepsy. It generally costs a pretty penny but if you and your doctor concur on it’s worthiness maybe it is something worth trying out.
  3. Whey protein – According to Web MD “Some research shows that taking whey protein in combination with strength training increases lean body mass, strength, and muscle size in healthy young adults. Taking whey protein also appears to improve running speed and recovery from exercise in untrained adults. But it does not appear to improve running speed or recovery in trained athletes. Taking whey protein also doesn’t seem to improve strength or muscle mass in overweight men with high cholesterol.” The dosage is not crystal clear and it may be determined by your goals. It’s common for BJJ athletes to take this supplement.
  4. Creatine – Creatine is a popular supplement among athletes and it is naturally produced in our body. According to WebMd evidence is mixed but some seem to suggest it can increase performance with sports that use sudden bursts of energy. The downside is you can retain water (thus making you slower according to WebMd) depending on which brand you consume.
