In a perfect world everything would be to our liking. But in Jiu Jitsu perfection comes in how you roll with whatever is put in front of you. Sometimes you may be the light guy or gal who weighs 140 lbs and you have to roll with a guy who weighs 240 lbs. Whoever shows up that day basically. Let’s take a look at some benefits of training Jiu Jitsu with bigger people.
- Rolling with a larger opponent will better prepare you for the street. Of course we can’t predict who are attacker may be if we get attacked. This is why rolling with bigger people is useful so we can be prepared. This is especially true if a female faces a larger stronger male, which is common. This will not only help you for a realistic situation but give you more confidence.
- It can help you to refine your technique. The strongest part of any person’s game is arguably their technique. If you become so technical that you can use your skills on larger opponents then you will have made efficient your game to the point where it can work on just about anybody.
- Rolling with a larger opponent will help you deal with stress and being able to remain calm. What do I mean by this? If a guy is on top half guard and out weighs you by double you may feel discomfort or even claustrophobic to an extent. You may have to be extra patient and breathe in a way that helps you to survive. Your space is being taken away from you so you have to find a way to deal with the circumstances that you may not be accustom to.
These are just 3 benefits of rolling with a larger opponent. I’m sure you may have some of your own. Feel free to share in the comments below.
